I was only imagining it before, but now it is here. Yes people, the country’s version of this popular reality is already in the works. Unlike its U.S. counterpart which indicates the area where the castaways would be isolated, Survivor Philippines will keep its location a secret.
It is expected that a lot of Filipinos would be interested to join in this show because it is somewhat new for the country. Pinoy Big Brother is already testing everybody’s patience, so Survivor Philippines would be a nice alternative. However, in contrast with PBB which only assesses the personality of its contenders, Survivor entails that the aspirants should be physically fit to face the challenges, so I’m already out of the picture.
Audition for Davao City is on May 1-2, so crank-up everyone!

Repair Shops
They can take it back to their repair shop and pretend like they know what they’re doing for 4-6 hours. Then they will call us the following week, and immediately giving us excuses as to why they were not able to get our monitor fixed. Of course, they didn’t charge us anything, but they asked for compensation for all the time they wasted on our broken computer monitor.

Attitude
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitude.
(This is a statement by Charles Swindoff)

If I Stay
Be prepared.
I'm going to trim somebody’s towering pride.
I’m not going to step on you,
But I’ll keep your feet rooted on the ground.
Still here to remind you that you’re not a god.
And here to see if you really deserve it.
Get the point?
You know something,
You think you know everything,
But you really don’t know anything.
You think you’re the best,
I think it’s just some funny jest.
People like you think they know everything,
But there is always something you don’t know,
And there is always someone who can teach you something new.
If I stay, that’s what I’ll do.

Karlo's Tales
This might sound obscene, but please don't pre-suppose. This is just how post-teens discuss about some awkward medical maladies. I almost laughed my dinner out in the jeepney as Karlo was telling his story. The manner that Karlo was telling this was very hilarious. And I think that his deserves an entry on my blog. I’m not expecting you to laugh, but if you’re curious, go on reading. If you don’t know what rectal means, then consult your biology books.
While we were on the jeepney and talking about billboards and life in general, Karlo suddenly opened up a topic, which I really don’t know what evoked him to do so. Anyway, he mentioned that in one of his physical examinations, he had a rectal test. And we were all like, “What?!” If you were there to witness how awkward it was to discuss such sensitive topics in a public place where there were other people besides our group, you would have immediately blurted out in laughter. Unfortunately, you weren’t. So, on with the story. Karlo narrated how the doctor inserted something unto the area where the rectal was supposed to be done. And I was like,”God, it’s so gross. Why is he even telling us about that?” Anyway, someone asked if the doctor was a male, but Karlo said (in much disgust) that it was a female. We were all laughing out of breath for a moment. Karlo said that before the test, the doctor asked, “Do you want to do a rectal?” and Karlo agreed for some strange reason. The test might have been conducted to see if Karlo had some prostate problems or something. Princess also told us that she also had a rectal test, and she mentioned that a narrow tube-like device was used for her. Suddenly, Karlo was shocked. Why? Because in Karlo’s case, a device wasn’t used, but just the fingers of the doctor. It was so gross to even think about. Eventually, the discussion lead to papsmear, and some boring medical stuff. Karlo even told us that we shouldn’t go to Davao Regional Hospital if we ever needed some medical services, since while he was there, he saw a pregnant woman almost on labor but was still standing on the long line of the cashier.
Sorry for those who were offended, but this was just a discussion based on an actual patient’s experience.

Party People
After the graduation, a series of gatherings were conducted to celebrate the accomplishments of our colleagues.
Just a few hours after the graduation, I had my humble graduation dinner at our house. For now, I wouldn’t mention the details since I feel so sleepy already, but I would like to say thank you to those who made the effort to attend, namely: Maverick Alinea, Trextan Thaddeus Sanchez, Sedrey Dickson Atay, Lorraine Raissa Yu, Margareth Ann Lacsamana and Edward Comidoy. They managed to slaughter the roasted pig’s tummy.
Then, two days later, Raissa also had her grand graduation gathering, which might be her farewell party. Her high school best buds came, as well as her dearly beloved and overly amiable peers. Of course, pasaway04 “the original comp sci batch 2004” were present too, namely: Karlo Palenzuela, Bryan Inno Wong, Glenn Guden (me), Maverick Alinea, Gian Alexis Abian, Margareth Ann Lacamana, Mary Charlen Joy Suedad, Sedfrey Dickson Atay, Oliver Villegas, and Carolino Wabingga. Food was overflowing, both figuratively and literally, as I accidentally spilled Pespsi on Karlo’s shoes. Sorry for that!!!
Goodness!!! The same group planned to conduct a reunion of the Pasaway04 to be conducted another two days later at SM City Davao at 3:30 pm. The day came, of course I came in late – as usual. Fortunately, several people came, namely: Karlo Palenzuela, Malene Jade Sanchez, Beatrice Magdolot, Edward Ray Comidoy, Maverick Alinea, Gian Alexis Abian, Margareth Ann Lacamana, Princess Grace Loyola, Sedfrey Dickson Atay, Oliver Villegas, and Glenn Guden (me again). We first had a photoshoot at 1001 Digital Photography Studio. As the rest of my pals looked wacky, I needed change my facial expression. Then, we had dinner at the Mandarin Tea Garden. Service was quite sluggish considering that we were starving and that the waitresses refused to take our orders for the lame excuse that they were busy. Anyway, we managed to fill our stomachs. Finally, after eater, we commuted towards Cats and Dogs Videoke Studio. But before that, on our way there, while we were chit-chatting in the jeepney, Karlo suddenly divulged an awkward and gross story (please refer to Karlo’s Rectal Tales). Then, after an hour of dancing like crazy and singing our lungs out (especially Karlo, who almost shattered our ear drums due to his scintillating voice), the group decided to go to Malene’s house to continue shattering the night. However, the boring me decided to go home with the lame excuse of having to study. I suppose that the rest of the pack continued to have fun at Malene’s house as they ate and sang to their heart’s content.
Til next time!!!

Awkward Moments
These are the situations where you might feel that something is inappropriate. This is when something that you’ve been avoiding all your life freaks you out. This is also when a person you thought you knew is actually a different person, or has some hidden target. In moments like these, you get easily affected but you don’t really know why. As much we hate it, awkward situations grab unwanted attention.
Some individuals find this as an opportunity to execute their wicked intentions, or make the awkward situation un-awkward but unintentionally make it more awkward for other people around them.
Sometimes, it is not really the person or thing that makes the whole situation awkward, but the people around you that makes everything such a big deal. People might take advantage of these moments. They see this as vulnerability, and they manipulate the situation to their advantage. They find a sort of amusement in the inducement of such behavior.
To avoid awkward situations, do not do anything that might lead you to it. As much as possible, avoid the things, the places and especially the people that might spur an awkward situation. If you know you’re gonna get into trouble or if you know you’re gonna regret, think twice before doing it, or don’t do it at all.

PhilNITS Passers for April 2008
On April 6, PhilNITS conducted its first batch of Fundamental IT Engineer’s (FE) exam in UIC. And from more than a hundred exam-takers in Davao City, only 3 were able to pass.
UPMin is proud to announce that it’s instructors, John Vincent Miro and Vanessa Castillo-Ramoran, were the two out of the three who passed.
This achievement might open more doors for them. Who knows?

Rice Crisis in the Philippines
Critics of the administration say that the current rice crisis that the country is facing is just a diversion from the ZTE-NBN deal. They argue that it is so convenient for the administration to deal with the alleged rice crisis since the media is now focusing its attention on the rice problem instead of the ZTE controversy. If this is so, then it’s a good diversion coz people are starting to forget about the impact made by Lozada. The news nowadays is all about rice, its prices, the hoarders, and the panic buyers.
Based on what I saw on TV, I learned that the rice supply in the country is divided into 3 classes as follows: 20% is allocated to the upper class, almost 30% is allocated to the middle class, while about 50% is for the lower class.
Actually, there is no rice shortage, the prices of the imported rice are increasing that’s why local rice producers tend to increase their prices too. Since the price of the competing imported rice is becoming higher, the local rice has no reason to settle with lower prices. Thus, they are taking advantage of the situation.
Moreover, the panic buying happening right now is caused by the fact that the 30% mid-priced rice is almost gone, thus the middle class people are crowding to buy the lower-priced rice. So, instead of having 50% of the population consume the allocated rice for them, now almost 80% of the population is competing for the same amount of rice. Talk about taking something from the under-privileged.
The economic experts’ suggestion: “Don’t eat rice.”

Graduating Happy and Sad
Several days ago, I had pre-graduation anxiety. I was afraid that something might go wrong before the graduation, so I hesitated on writing anything about the upcoming event. I was afraid of jinx. I felt so stupid worrying about the unknown.
A few days after graduating, I feel kinda weird. I am extremely glad, but at the same time, I feel really anxious about my future. Graduating is such a liberating experience. Initially, I thought that the time to momentarily escape from being burdened by homework and exams, and no more resentments caused by dealing with pesky classmates. Haha! After four years of hardships and sacrifices, I finally got my degree.
However, graduating is also a bit upsetting. Why? This is because I’ll miss all the fun moments in school, and I’ll miss all the people who brought colors to my boring life. Well, my life is still boring, but not that much. It’s very sad is that we are going our separate ways, and we will never know when we’ll meet again. Actually, I’m glad that some people are going coz it’s feels like some gloomy clouds are being cleared away, but to the rest who’s going to leave, I’ll miss them. But, I know that there’s no need to be melancholy coz it’s just a small world and it’s getting smaller by the minute.
Anyway, what’s really depressing right now is that breaking free from being a student just means that I’m entering the cruel real world. It’s so scary. It’s like writing a new book. What stories will this new book of my life contain?

Hardwork Recognized
The University of the Philippines rarely gives special awards and citations, thus every recognition counts. It’s nice to know that several of our original Computer Science batch mates (2004) have been given special citations during our graduation week.
Our first and only cum laude for UPMin BS Comp. Sci., Lorraine Raissa Yu, was given a special citation for leadership. While, Glenn Guden – me – was given the Best Special Problem award. I didn’t expect anything like this, but I was very glad that my hard work and sacrifices paid-off. On the other hand, Gian Alexis Abian, who shifted into BA Comm. Arts, was also given a special citation for culture and the arts; whereas, Mary Charlen Suedad, another BACA shiftee, also received the Best Thesis award. Way to go pals!!!
It feels great that so much hard work and dedication was finally recognized. I hope that this motivates us more to do better in our future endeavors.

Scarcity of Cum Laudes?
Unlike other universities in the region, UP in Mindanao (UPMin), only has 5 cum laudes at this year’s commencement exercises. This number might look small, but this does not tell us that UPMin students are incompetent.
We are all intelligent; otherwise, how could the students ever pass the grueling admission test? The University of the Philippines (UP) is proud to say that it’s college admission test (UPCAT) is competent enough to sieve out the best among the best students in the country.
With this tight screening, why do we end up with lesser honor students as compared to other universities? This is because UP brings the extraordinary out of mediocrity. Every student in UP is smart; however, intelligence is such a mediocre scene in UP. It’s so commonplace. You’re in UP, you’re supposed to be smart. But, in order to stand-out in UP, you should be more than just intelligent. You should be more than what is expected of you, even if you are left alone.
Graduating from UP already gives you a sense of pride, but you need to be extraordinary to fly with colors.

UPMin Gradutes for 2008
I would like to congratulate my fellow U.P. centennial graduates at the "University of the Philippines Mindanao" campus, especialyl those from the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.
We are very privileged to have attained not just a college degree, but a U.P. degree. Our teachers always emphasized that we are the "premiere state university" and they're right. Being in U.P. was never a smooth ride (both figuratively and literally).

Slasher
You are about to know a new use of the word “slasher.” No, this is not the one who kills his victims morbidly by slashing some body parts until thick blood oozes out. OK, enough of that gross stuff. Read on…
Our teacher in one of my literature subjects, Jean Claire Dy, introduced what being a “slasher” means. She said that as we grow older, we become a slasher. This refers to the fact that as we grow older in this society, our fields of interests or careers become broader or encompasses different segments of the social spectrum. In simple terms, you are not limited to just one profession or field, thus you need a slash to designated those facets of your life. For example you can be a “computer programmer
The previous paragraph was just an introduction to this next one.
Have you ever noticed that gadgets made from China are also slashers? Fro example, my father recently bought this radio that happens to be flashlight too. Furthermore, the radio can also receive signals outside the country, specially those from Southeast Asia.

Camera Reviews
This will one of the few un-sponsored reviews that I’ll be making on this blog. So, here it goes…
Digital cameras are becoming a craze nowadays. With the advent of digital photography, it is now very convenient to capture the memorable moments, and even the boring, moments of your life. But, the challenge to consumers nowadays is how to select the digital camera that suits their needs, and most specially their budget.
Here are some common camera brands that I’m familiar with, and my comments on them.
Entry-level cameras from Kodak, which have 5 to 7 megapixels resolution, are nice if you are not a serious or are not a professional photographer. Current prices may range from 5,000 to 11,000 pesos. The easy-share series is very convenient, i.e. small and compact. It’s sufficient for capturing those candid moments. However, when the pictures are viewed at 100% resolution, some harsh elements are apparent, such as hexagonal pixel formation. However, the high-end and more expensive Kodak cameras used by professionals are really great, even if you are in low lighting conditions. Small details are really detected, such as pimples and pores.
A popular camera manufacturer, Canon, have ones with high quality images. Flash length is far, so subjects from 3 to 4 meters away still look sharp. Furthermore, skin tone is aptly preserved. Entry-level ones might range from 7,000 to 12,000 pesos.
Another popular gadget and appliance manufacturer, Sony, boasts that their cameras have advanced motion and image sensors and micropocressors. Early Sony cameras do not give high-quality photos in low lighting conditions. some pictures i've seen have halos and weird glowing auras. but, other than that, the images are acceptable. Moreover, the recent models now have anti-blur or anti-shake capabilities. The image processors now have finer sensors fro capture sharper images. for nice quality Sony cameras, prepare around 14,000 to 24,000 pesos.
Here are a few tips or considerations the right digital camera
*Response time: When you click the capture button, how much time is needed to take the photo? preferably, the lesser time, the better.
*Light-Sensitivity: The camera must be able to capture sharp images even in low lighting conditions.
*Flash length: Even if the subject is far away, they should be properly lighted. Choose the camera which you think suits the situation you expect it to be used.
*Color balance: it if preferable that the pictures look very similar, if not exact, to the original subject.
*Resolution: this will determine to what size the picture can be enlarged without diminishing the quality. Hint: remember that a picture with a 5-megapixel resolution can enlarged up to an A4 size considering the optimum quality.

Tips for Sanity
I just feel like writing this.
Below are merely chunks of advice that I’ve been telling myself to keep myself in the domain of sanity. Most of which has turned out to be practically my philosophies in life. (Actually again, I’ve got nothing better to note down. If you are reading this at the jiffy, then obviously I haven’t mulled over on any staggering matter.) These won’t be intricate to decipher.
• Don’t be hooked on a situation if you won’t be on cloud nine. If you are already in one, then hit upon a tactic to get out of it.
• Think that you’re better than someone you extremely abominate, so that next time, you won’t be timid to that person.
• Do things a lot better than the one you despise. (I’m working on it.) That person will later on be in awe of you, and will lament that he/she got in your way.
• Make your resentment towards a person your power hoard. Actually, it is nifty.
• Don’t dwell too long on your wretchedness; moreover, don’t wallow too exceedingly on your feats. All is fleeting. Believe me, I’ve been there.
• Be with chums whom you can chuckle with. I hate it when my companions snicker at me, not because I divulged a clever jest, but because they made me look and feel asinine.
• Be with buddies, not because you need them, but because they need you. I like it when my pals get pleasure from my company.
• Don’t bother retorting to people who get on your nerves, especially when they call you absurd names. Retorting implies tolerating their domineering conduct. If you don’t retort, then the ones who called you ridiculous aliases will look preposterous.
• Don’t procrastinate. It’s a mortal sin. Whenever you do so, chastise yourself. Carry out self-discipline.
• Jot down what’s on your psyche. (Like this!) Don’t be pretentious.
(I already wrote this in my journal for one of my subjects.)

Friendship
Many people will walk in and out of your life.
But only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
To handle yourself, use your head;
To handle others, use your heart.
Friends
Anger is only one letter short of danger
If someone betrays you once, it is his fault;
If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.
Great minds discuss ideas;
Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.
He, who loses money, loses much;
He, who loses a friend, loses much more;
He, who loses faith, loses all.
Beautiful young people are accidents of nature,
But beautiful old people are works of art.
Learn from the mistakes of others
You can't live long enough to make them all
yourself.
Friends, you and me...
You brought another friend...
And then there were 3...
We started our group...
Our circle of friends...
And like that circle...
There is no beginning or end...
Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is mystery.
Today is a gift.
That is why it is called the present.
Show your friends how much you care...
Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND.
If it comes back to you, then you'll know you
have a circle of friends.
When you receive this letter,
I recommend that you send it to all your friends,
including the person who sent it to you!
You don't have to send it to your friends, it's your choice.
I don't want to force you to do it, but trust me;
it's always good to tell your friends
some nice words now and then
and that you care...
Don't make them disappointed!
(This poem was written by Eleanor Roosevelt)

This is the chain mail from one of my friends. Instead of making the effort to send it to my friends, I just posted this in my blog, so that everyone could immediately read it when they stumble upon my humble blog. Anyway, I hope that the insights of this poem gets to you.

How his kisses taste sweet like wine
And how he always makes your heart skip a beat
Everytime he walks by
And if your feelin down
He'll pick you up
He'll hold you close when your makin love
He's everything you've been dreamin of
Oh baby
Chorus:
I wish you'd look at me that way
Your beautiful eyes lookin deep into mine
Tellin me more
Than any words could say
But you don't even know I'm alive
Baby to you all I am
Is the invisible man
You don't see me baby
You probly spend hours on the phone
Talkin bout nothin at all
It doesn't matter what the conversation
Just as long as he calls
Lost in a love so real
And so sincere
And he'll wipe away
All your tears
Your face lights up whenever he appears
(Chorus)
I see you all the time baby
The way you look at him
I wish it was me sweetheart
Boy I wish it was me
But I guess it never will be
(Chorus twice)
Oh oh oh
The invisble man
You don't see me girl
But I love you
Yes I love you
The invisible man
Oh oh oh

The invisible man
Baby, baby, baby

Addicted to Tweaking
That's right. I'm an addict. Well, not that kind of sleazy addict, but I'm addicted to tweaking my O.S. (operating system).
I was like getting bored of my Windows XP, so I decided to search for additional themes on the net. At first, I decided to use a WinVista theme when I was unfamiliar with it. But, later when I got hold of vists, i realized that it was just like XP in more ways than one, so I decided to use another OS theme -- Apple Mac. Initially, I just relocated the task bar from the bottom to the top of my desktop, then I added a dock at the bottom. The dock looks really nice. I've downloaded hundreds of dock icons (specifically the PNG ones). It's really great coz the Icons are actually customizable, i.e. you can create your own. I even downloaded several icon packages to manually customize icon on my PC. I already have icon tweaker, icoFX, icon box, tweak ui, and other OS user interface modifications.
It's fun that you are not limited to the basic look of you're PC. It's like having new clothes.

Lozada, a Celebrity?
Jun Lozada, the well-known ZTE broadband deal scandal star witness, got more than 15 minutes of fame. It's quite amazing how one ICT Engineer becomes an inspirational with a celebrity status. Well, I'm not mocking him. This is just my initial reaction when him on TV being hysterical and all.
After being allegedly kidnapped, he comes out with a bunch of nuns and priests on his back. He was brave enough, amid the security concerns, to reveal the details of the controversial ZTE deal. But, what is really amusing now is that he is touring around certain schools around the country and becoming an inspirational speaker and all. I think that he likes all the attention he's getting. He's been treated like a prophet who came down to tell us about the evils of the government. Lozada is lucky that he has not been assasinated by having too much public exposure.

Pointy Toes
Nowadays, high society people consider pointy shoes as being more formal. Mind you, this applies to both men and women. I don't quite understand this weird trend.
I heard someone on TV being mad at this trend, and saying that: "I don't have one pointed toe, I have five round ones."

Janina, Oh No!
I wasn't able to watch the Bb. Pilipinas coronation night, almost a month ago. But, a lot of fuss has been going on about a title holder by the name of Janina San Miguel, so I searched her video on YouTube, and stumbled upon this funny scene:
Paolo: So you won the two major awards, the best in long gown and the best in swim suit. Do you feel any pressure right now.
Janina: No, i don't feel any pressure right now.
Paolo: Confident, alright. Please chose the name of a judge.
Paolo: We have Miss Vivien Tan.
Vivien: Good evening.
Janina: Good ebning.
Vivien: The question is: "What role did your family play with you as candidate to the Bb. Pilipinas?"
Janina: Well, my family's role for me is so important. Becos their was, they was the one who's very...haha. Oh, I'm so sorry. Uhm, my pamily, my family... Oh my God.
Janina: OK. I'm so sorry. I, I told that I'm so confident. Eto, uhm... wait, ahahaha. Uhm... Sorry guys, this was really my pirst pageant ever. Because I'm only seventeen years old. And, haha, I did not expect that I came from one of the taf ten. So, but I said that, my family es the most important persons in my life. Thank you.
It's quite too late to publicize my reaction now. But it's fun to reminisce the blunders of other people. Haha.
She managed to be what anyone else was afraid to become -- a national laughing stock. You could see the look on her face as she struggles to pick up the pieces of her broken integrity that night. She still has a few months to prepare. We just hope that she'll have a chance to redeem herself.
I'm not mocking this beautiful lady, but I'm just showing that scenes like this could have been avoided if even at an early age, Filipino children were already proficient in "international business language" (as our teacher calls it) english.
Does this show that the quality of education in this country is declining? Can anyone save us from this awful nation? Please...
