I just installed the latest Ubuntu release called "Hardy Heron." I also have two earlier Ubuntu versions namely, Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon. Installing on my PC required me to set-up a dedicated to this operating system. I already had an installation of Windows XP on a separate partition on my PC that had important files in it, so I was quite hesitant to install the new system even it was on a separate partition. I didn't have substantial knowledge on what Ubuntu was when I got the CD. Someone just told me that it could be ordered freely from a website.
When I got my first Ubuntu CD, I immediately searched for information about it on the Internet. I scanned forums and read testimonials just to determine if Ubuntu was worth installing. So, the point came when I already convinced myself to install Ubuntu. After setting up a new 10 GB partition on my 80 GB hard disk, I was ready install Ubuntu. The Feisty Fawn version really annoyed me since it didn't work well with my current monitor. It only allowed a screen resolution of up to 800x600 pixels. Aaagghhh!!! The icons and windows were to big, and they wouldn't even fit in my screen area. While installing Feisty Fawn, the "next" and "cancel" buttons were on the bottom of the install window; thus, I couldn't see them. How tragic! Anyway, I found a technique to continue installing the damn system. Why did I persist on installing Feisty Fawn although it allowed only a 800x600 resolution? This was because on the back of my mind, I was kinda hoping that once installed, it would allow a higher resolution. After installing, I tried re-configuring my screen's resolution in Ubuntu, but much to my dismay, I couldn't adjust it. Eventually, I got so much annoyed with that it was immediately bound for uninstallation.
A few months later, I then got Ubuntu's subsequent version, "Gutsy Gibbon." Fortunately, this one worked well with my monitor, and allowed me use a 1024x768 screen resolution, unlike Feisty Fawn. It also allowed me to enabled the amazing visual effects Ubuntu had to offer, like elastic and fading windows, and workspace switcher/slider. In other words, I kept this Ubuntu installation on my PC.
Just a few months later, I know have Ubuntu's latest version, "Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron." I wondered what LTS meant. Wikipedia states that LTS means "Long Term Support." In other words, this software version will get longer support from it developers. So, I thought that this Ubuntu release might be special.
Unlike previous Ubuntu versions, which needed a dedicated partition in order to be installed, Hardy Heron can be installed within your existing Windows system just like a common program.
However, the 21st century doesn't seem to exist in the Linux universe. Half of the things that just needed a click of a button in windows, needs a command that has to be executed in Linux's console (command prompt) terminal.
Oh well, Ubuntu is still in its infancy, so we might see further improvements in the coming years.

I.T. is not for Everybody
![]()
"I.T. is not everybody. It is only for people with high logical aptitude. You are lucky that you have that ability."
These were the words that struck me during the PhilNits Orientation for Faculty, which was conducted by Aloycius Torres (a.k.a. "Loy"). Perhaps, he is right. We cannot force anyone to learn and be interested in I.T. or computer science concepts, especially if they are not intellectually inclined to that. All of those computer technicalities may just intimidate and confuse them. It's quite a scary thought -- but it is happening. Therefore, those are naturally inclined to I.T. should not waste that gift. They should further enhance their capabilities because by doing so, a lot of opportunities may come their way.

Windows 7, anyone?

With the advent of Windows Vista, some skeptics still aren't convinced that it's a practical operating system. There's too much fluff, but focuses less on functionality.
The answer to all these yearnings might be Windows 7, the next Operating System (OS) version from Windows.
Although Gates is keeping his mouth shut (in order to focus on marketing Vista), some reliable sources have said that this new OS will be released sometime in the later half of 2009, or early 2010.
For now, let's settle with our slightly emo-looking Vista. Haha. Why does it have to be black? It just scares the kids.
Trivia:
Why name the next Windows version as Windows 7? So, does that mean that Windows Vista is really Windows 6? The answer is yes, apparently. If you try to look at your "About Windows" menu, you'll that in XP, it is labeled as Windows 5.1, while in Vista it is labeled as Windows 6.0... So, the name Windows 7 might be too technical... But, it's still good, for a change...

Pacquiao for Congressman -- Again?
I heard from the news last night that Manny Pacquiao just signed-up with a political party. For what reason? He's running for Congressman of Gen. San. -- again.
His new political mates said that they initially wanted Manny to run for Senator, but he is still underaged. I don't know if they were joking or something, but it sounded almost hilarious and a bit insulting. Why? This is because Philippine politics is becoming a circus. If we have someone like Manny to lead our country, then everything would be in havoc. Will the country be a big boxing ring? The voters will have the answer to this.

I Almost Had You by Simple Plan
I almost got drunk at school at 14
Where I almost made out with the homecoming queen
Who almost went on to be miss texas
But lost to a slut with much bigger breastes
I almost dropped out to move to LA
Where I was almost famous for almost a day
And I almost had you
But I guess that doesn't cut it
Almost loved you
I almost wished u would've loved me too
I almost held up a grocery store
Where I almost did 5 years and then 7 more
Cuz I almost got popped for a fight with a thug
Cuz he almost made off with a bunch of the drugs
That I almost got hooked on cuz you ran away
And I wish I woulda had the nerve to ask you to stay
And I almost had you
But I guess that doesn't cut it
Almost had you
And I didn't even know it
You kept me guessing and now I'm destined
to spend my time missing you
I almost wish you would've loved me too
Here I go thinking about all the things I could've done
I'm gonna need a forklift cuz all the baggage weighs a ton
I know we had our problems I can't remember one
I almost forgot to say something else
And if I cant fit it in I'll keep it all to myself
I almost wrote a song about you today
But I tore it all up and then I threw it away
And I almost had you
But I guess that doesn't cut it
Almost had you
And I didn't even know it
You kept me guessing and now I'm destined
to spend my time missing you
And I almost had you [x3]
I almost wish you would've loved me too

Year 3000 by the Jonas Brothers
One day when I came home at lunchtime,
I heard a funny noise.
Went out to the back yard to find out if it was,
One of those rowdy boys.
Stood there with my neighbor called Peter,
And a Flux Capacitor.
He told me he built a time machine.
Like one in a film I've seen,
Yeah... he said...
I've been to the year 3000
Not much has changed but they lived under water.
And your great great great grand daughter,
Is doing fine (doing fine).
He took me to the future in the flux thing, and I saw everything.
Boy bands, and another one and another one ... and another one!
Girls there with round hair like Star Wars float above the floor
We drove around in a time machine,
Like the one in the film I've seen..
Yeah... he said...
He said, I've been to the year 3000.
Not much has changed but they lived under water,
And your great great great grand daughter,
Is doing fine (doing fine).
I took a trip to the year 3000.
This song had gone multi-platinum.
Everybody bought our 7th album.
It had outsold Kelly Clarkson.
I took a trip to the year 3000.
This song had gone multi-platinum.
Everybody bought our 7th album, 7th album, 7th album.
He told me he built a time machine.
Like the one in a film I've seen,
Yeah...
I've been to the year 3000.
Not much has changed but they lived under water.
And your great great great grand daughter,
