A lot of people (particularly the fans of the Dragonball Z Anime) have been excited for the Hollywood rendition of this popular Anime TV-series. However, many of them were disappointed upon watching the trailer.
The Anime version features a young Goku who was raised and trained by an old pervert named Master Roshi. Later in the series, he becomes a full-fledged (un-educated and slightly barbaric) martial arts expert, who’ll fight the evil Nemic Piccolo who wants spread havoc on Earth. Moreover, Goku was also tasked to collect all seven dragonballs in order to summon a mystic dragon who grants one wish.
However, the movie version (or the Hollywood version, since there are already Japanese movies based on the Anime) makes several modifications to the set-up of the story. First, Goku is not un-educated anymore. Some previews show Goku as he goes to High School. Haha… I think the Americans don’t want their heroes to be stupid. Anyway, moving on, Master Roshi is not the playful dirty-minded old man anymore. He is just now the serious old man who reveals some ancient secret, blah, blah. Moreover, there won’t be a martial arts competition where Goku and Piccolo will come face to face with each other for the first time. I encountered a view pictures that showed a martial arts arena, but the caption said that it was just part of the high school. Another thing that’s really different from the Anime is that Piccolo doesn’t arrive to Earth in a discreet manner. Piccolo lands to the planet using an oversized space ship, and then starts destroying cities. Just imagine Piccolo borrowing Freeza’s fleet. Hehe…
Well, looking on the bright side, at least the Hollywood version doesn’t try to be a copycat of the original Anime. I bet there will be a lot of things that the Anime fans would be looking forward to in this movie.
