I just watched the trailer of the latest installment to the X-Men franchise, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and I was glad to see the other mutants who were not featured in the previous films. There was Sabertooth, Gambit, etc…
Reading the title, my first impression was that this “X-Men Origins” franchise might have several other installments to come. Duh… The title says “X-Men Origins:
It opens on May 1st.

Dragonball Evolution [Movie]

A lot of people (particularly the fans of the Dragonball Z Anime) have been excited for the Hollywood rendition of this popular Anime TV-series. However, many of them were disappointed upon watching the trailer.
The Anime version features a young Goku who was raised and trained by an old pervert named Master Roshi. Later in the series, he becomes a full-fledged (un-educated and slightly barbaric) martial arts expert, who’ll fight the evil Nemic Piccolo who wants spread havoc on Earth. Moreover, Goku was also tasked to collect all seven dragonballs in order to summon a mystic dragon who grants one wish.
However, the movie version (or the Hollywood version, since there are already Japanese movies based on the Anime) makes several modifications to the set-up of the story. First, Goku is not un-educated anymore. Some previews show Goku as he goes to High School. Haha… I think the Americans don’t want their heroes to be stupid. Anyway, moving on, Master Roshi is not the playful dirty-minded old man anymore. He is just now the serious old man who reveals some ancient secret, blah, blah. Moreover, there won’t be a martial arts competition where Goku and Piccolo will come face to face with each other for the first time. I encountered a view pictures that showed a martial arts arena, but the caption said that it was just part of the high school. Another thing that’s really different from the Anime is that Piccolo doesn’t arrive to Earth in a discreet manner. Piccolo lands to the planet using an oversized space ship, and then starts destroying cities. Just imagine Piccolo borrowing Freeza’s fleet. Hehe…
Well, looking on the bright side, at least the Hollywood version doesn’t try to be a copycat of the original Anime. I bet there will be a lot of things that the Anime fans would be looking forward to in this movie.

Why I Hate PUJs

Taking the Public Utility Jeepneys (PUJ) or jeeps is the most conventional manner of commuting in the Philippines, but in the years of riding it, each trip was never delightful.
The foremost concern in jeepneys is the presence of excessive passengers. It is really annoying when the barkers (people who call passengers) always try to fill the vehicle up to it’s maximum passenger capacity. Although the maximum number of persons that the vehicle could contain is indicated on it, I don’t think they should always try to fill the vehicle up to that number since it just presupposes that persons who’ll ride the vehicle are all thin, but essentially most passengers are larger than what they’re assuming. Moreover, this forces other passenger to also cling on the entrance of the jeep just to ride it. It is quite awkward to have people riding on a vehicle while being outside of it.
Another thing that bugs me the most is ridiculous extra baggage that people load not only inside, but also outside the jeep. There are all sorts of vegetables, crops, and animals (chickens, goats, etc…), and whatever filthy things that come from rural areas. It’s actually alright that some people bring those stuff, but the drivers should only allow them as long as they don’t cause any inconvenience to the other passengers. At times, the things that they bring are so stinky. It’s so unbearable sometimes.
Sometimes, their baggages seem to be bigger than the vehicle itself. Thus, they should not overload the vehicle. It almost seems that the jeep would flip over, or fall over a cliff (if it was along a cliff).
One minor case that annoys me in jeepneys is when it’s full of children. Kids tend to be restless and noisy, thus, it’s so bothersome for some passengers (like me) who prefer to keep settled during the travel. One more thing… kids often get sick in the vehicle. So, they vomit inside the jeep. It’s just horrible.
If the vehicle is stinky with efficascent oil, probably someone is about to vomit… brace yourselves.

Womanizer Pirate Rock Version

In the tradition of pursuingremakes of big hits (e.g. Rihanna’s Umbrella remade by Mandy Moore ), Yahoo again adds another remake to its archive by letting the All American Rejects make fun of Britney’s hit Womanizer.
Haha… It was actually hilarious and slightly awkward to see an all-male rock group perform a song that was really meant to be done by a girl. They looked like drugged or something, but at least they seemed to be having fun while doing that skit.
I can't upload the video here, so just search it on YouTube...

Whitening Products Deceiving Ads

Products that allegedly lighten a person’s complexion have been emerging on the market like crazy. What’s more peculiar about these products is their advertisements. Billboards, posters, TV commercials, etc… of these products sometimes claim seemingly impossible medical miracles (sorry, the sentence may sound stupid, but you get the point).
Some ads are quite insulting, while others are hilarious.
One ad that was quite insolent was the one which said that lighter skin is healthier than darker ones since pinkish white skin has more vitamins. Does this mean that being dark-skinned is an illness?
Moreover, most ads about whitening products feature people who are already naturally fair-skinned. So, obviously their complexion is not principally caused by the product they are endorsing, but it is caused by their genes. Thus, it is so foolish to fall into that marketing trap.
Just recently, an ad featuring a local actress who has an Afro-American descent got suddenly fair-skinned. I don’t intend to offend or anything, but this seems a bit freaky. I am certain that this isn’t caused by a simple whitening product, but it is due to an extreme medical operation or something. Is this supposed to make us believe that the certain whitening product can make miracles by freeing us from our genetic curse of being dark-skinned?
All of these ads place a misconception in our minds that light-skinned people are more superior to darker ones, and that we should try to become lighter skinned as much as possible. OMG! This is an insane belief.
Are we being influenced to hate our race? Is it bad to have a darker complexion? Do we need to hate the skin we are in?

Showbiz News is Stupid

Every news program has a short segment that discusses updates on showbiz personalities. Most of the time, if not all of the time, these segments contain stuff that are irrelevant to our lives. Thus, it is quite awkward to insert such insignificance in a serious program.
The biggest showbiz issue as of this writing is the break-up of Jolina Magdandal and her beau. The parties involved refuse to divulge any details about the break-up, however, the showbiz reporters keep on making a big deal out of it as if it were as important as the war in Gaza. Whenever it comes to showbiz love affairs, a lot of fans and reporters become so immature. In reality, a lot of couples who lasted longer eventually broke-up too, but the public never even bothered to ask the reason why. There are a lot of more controversial couple issues in which normal (not celebrity) people are involved, but they people don’t pay attention to them.
Another stupid news that I heard was on the radio about KC’s birthday wish to her mom, Sharon. The anchormen were playing some teasers of the showbiz segment. However, when the segment was finally reported, it turned out that the teaser was the same with the showbiz segment report. It was just a waste to time. What makes KC’s birthday message to her mom so special anyway. A lot of children have a birthday wish to their moms. KC’s message wasn’t profound, and it wasn’t that moving either.
There are a lot more nonsense lurking in showbiz new segments. You’ll never fail to encounter one daily.
Things like this just illustrate that news is not always about the events themselves, but it is now focused on the people involved in those events.

Do I Need a Jacket?

Since mid-December until now, the weather has been a bit gloomy. The sky has been cloudy with a drizzle now and then.
According to weather reports, the Philippines is currently under a tropical depression. Other sources also say that the cold weather (well, it’s kinda cold compared to our usual days) will peak in February. Haha... I guess everybody should prepare their jackets now.
The sun has been a bit shy, and hides itself among the clouds.
It’s a bit cold, but I love it. I am was never fond of sunny days, but I’m not a fan of stormy days either. I just like days when the sun is covered by clouds so that it’s burning rays won’t us (hehe, am I becoming vampirish now?). I just want enough warmth to sustain us, and not burn us to death. Besides, with this cold weather, we could finally experiment with layering our clothes. In the Philippines, layering clothes is quite impractical since the usual days are sunny and hot. Weather extra layers of clothes makes you feel you’re in a sauna.
Moreover, this present weather will allow us to wear those long sleeves and expensive jackets, and prevent them from rotting.
Hey! You might need a jacket too.

I Missed a Shower

To be exact, “I missed a meteor shower.” While I was checking my NASA.gov account too see if something outside earth was worth the effort to see, I was disappointed to know that I just missed Quadrantids Meteor Shower by just 1 day!!! Aaah!!
Here is what I read from seasky.org: “The Quadrantids are an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower will peak this year on January 3 & 4, but some meteors can be visible from January 1 - 5. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight on the morning. Look for meteors radiating from the constellation Bootes. The first quarter moon will set by midnight, providing a good viewing opportunity.”
I can’t believe I missed the first major astronomical event of 2009, and it sucks. Haha.. Ok, I might be overreacting, but it would have been great you know – opening my year with such a spectacle.
Since I was a kid, I was very much fascinated by astronomical events. Meteors, comets, eclipses, and even UFOs were part of my world.
Whenever I come home late after school, and until now whenever I go home in the middle of the night, I never fail to stare at the bewildering expanse of space above me, and sometimes I wish for something extraordinary to happen.

Back to Blogging -- I Hope
My teaching load this year is a lot lighter compared last year. That's why I hope to resume my blog life this year.
I hope that there'll be more stuff to write about this year, and more time for me to think...
I'll try to make-up for the time lost for blogging.

Astronomical Events for 2009

To other aspiring astronomers and fellow astronomy enthusiasts, here are the dates that you should be mindful about:
January 3, 4 - Quadrantids Meteor Shower. The Quadrantids are an above average shower, with up to 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower will peak this year on January 3 & 4, but some meteors can be visible from January 1 - 5. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight on the morning. Look for meteors radiating from the constellation Bootes. The first quarter moon will set by midnight, providing a good viewing opportunity.
January 26 - Annular Solar Eclipse. The path of annularity will begin off the coast of South Africa and move east and north through the Indian Ocean and into Sumatra and Borneo. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout most of southern Africa, southeastern Asia, and western Australia.
February 9 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of eastern Europe, Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and western North America.
March 8 - Saturn at Opposition. The ringed planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view and photograph Saturn and its moons.
March 20 - The Vernal Equinox occurs in the northern hemisphere at 11:44 UT. There will be equal amounts of day and night. This is also the first day of spring.
April 21, 22 - Lyrids Meteor Shower. The Lyrids are an average shower, usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. These meteors can produce bright dust trails that last for several seconds. The shower will peak this year on April 21 & 22, although some meteors are usually visible from April 16 - 25. This year, a waning crescent moon will create only a slight distraction, but most of the meteors should be easy to see. Look for meteors radiating from the constellation of Lyra after midnight.
May 5, 6 - Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Eta Aquarids are a light shower, usually producing about 10 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower's peak will occur on May 5 & 6, however viewing should be good on any morning from May 4 - 7. This year, a waxing gibbous mon will hide all but the brightest meteors. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Aquarius. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.
June 21 - The Summer Solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere at 05:45 UT. The Sun is at its highest point in the sky and it will be the longest day of the year. This is also the first day of summer.
July 7 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and the Americas.
July 22 - Total Solar Eclipse. The path of totality will begin in central India and move east through Nepal and China where it will end in the central Pacific Ocean. A partial eclipse will be visible throughout most of eastern Asia and Hawaii.
July 28, 29 - Southern Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower. The Delta Aquarids usually produce about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower will peak this year on July 28 & 29, but meteors can usually be seen from July 18 - August 18. The near first quarter moon will set early, providing an excellent viewing experience after midnight. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Aquarius. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.
August 6 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of the Americas, Europe, Africa, and western Asia.
August 12, 13 - Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at their peak. This year's peak occurs on August 13 & 14, but you may be able to see some meteors any time from July 23 - August 22. The waxing gibbous moon will provide some interference in the evening, but after it sets, the morning hours should provide some spectacular viewing opportunities. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Perseus. Look to the northeast after midnight.
August 14 - Jupiter at Opposition. The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view and photograph Jupiter and its moons.
August 17 - Neptune at Opposition. The blue planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view Neptune, although it will only appear as a tiny blue dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.
September 17- Uranus at Opposition. The blue-green planet will be at its closest approach to Earth. This is the best time to view Uranus, although it will only appear as a tiny blue-green dot in all but the most powerful telescopes.
September 22 - The Autumnal Equinox occurs in the northern hemisphere at 21:18 UT. There will be equal amounts of day and night. This is also the first day of fall.
October 13 - Conjunction of Venus and Saturn. The planets Venus and Saturn will appear only a half-degree apart in the early morning sky.
October 21, 22 - Orionids Meteor Shower. The Orionids is an average shower producing about 20 meteors per hour at their peak. This shower usually peaks on the 21st, but it is highly irregular. A good show could be experienced on any morning from October 20 – 24, and some meteors may be seen any time from October 17 - 25. This year, a waxing crescent moon will set early, providing an excellent viewing opportunity. Best viewing will be to the east after midnight.
November 17, 18 - Leonids Meteor Shower. The Leonids is one of the better meteor showers to observe, producing an average of 40 meteors per hour at their peak. The shower itself has a cyclic peak year every 33 years where hundreds of meteors can be seen each hour. The last of these occurred in 2001. The shower peaks this year on November 17 & 18, but you can usually see some meteors from November 13 - 20. The moon will be totally out of the way this year, providing an exceptional viewing experience for the Leonids. Look for the shower radiating from the constellation Leo after midnight.
December 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. The peak of the shower is on December 13 & 14, although some meteors should be visible from December 6 - 19. This year, a nearly new moon will provide an excellent viewing experience in the early morning hours. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Gemini. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight.
December 21 - The Winter Solstice occurs in the northern hemisphere at 17:47 UT. The Sun is at its lowest point in the sky and it will be the shortest day of the year. This is also the first day of winter.
December 31 - Partial Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

Unlucky Fridays in 2009
February 13, 2009
March 13, 2009
November 13, 2009
Count = 3.
Surprisingly, the 13th. day of a month is slightly more
likely to occur on a Friday than on any other day of the
week.
The first unlucky Friday was October 13, 1307 (Julian
calendar). On that day, King Philip IV of France ordered
all Knights Templar in that country to be arrested and
their property sequestered.
